Housing

Hale Makana and the Westside Affordable Units

Ka Hale A Ke Ola has an affordable rental housing component for Maui’s community that provides safe, secure long-term rental housing for Maui’s low-income families.

Hale Makana O’ Waiale and the Westside Affordable Housing are the permanent housing component for Ka Hale A Ke Ola Homeless Resource Centers (KHAKO).

Construction began in 1996 on Hale Makana O Waiale (HMOW), a 200-unit apartment project located on 12 acres next door to the KHAKO Homeless Shelter in Wailuku. The apartments consist of 30 low-rise buildings that include 24 studio units, 128 two-bedroom units, 32 three-bedroom units, and 16 four-bedroom units.

Approximately 1,400 people live at HMOW, enjoying clean and spacious apartments in a convenient location, with a community center, laundry facilities and a three-acre park operated by the County of Maui.

In December 2002, KHAKO broke ground in Lahaina to construct the West Side Affordable housing complex. Thirty two-bedroom apartment units were built and offer many of the same amenities as HMOW. This housing complex has helped make many families dreams of housing a reality.
